Proximity The people (customers) who live in the same areas of a coffee shop seemed to visit them more regularly and regardless of the proximity some customers seem to visit the coffee shop they preferred the most even weekly. Majority of the customers also seemed to be visiting coffee shops occasionally. Behavior of customers Most of the customers in these coffee shops seem to be associating with at least one person and the individuals seemed to be visiting the coffee shop to do some particular work of study or other. In general, the majority of local customers are higher (more than 50%) than foreign customers in these coffee shops. Regular life and coffee shops When considering about the regular pattern of taking m eals, most customers donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t always take their breakfast, lunch or dinner at coffee shops. The minority of them has the habit of taking at least (mostly dinner) one meal from the coffee shops more frequently. Services and other facilities Most of the customers suggested that there should be more interior and parking facilities in these coffee shops. The social aspect of coffee shops Results from the coding and analysis of the interviews, survey data, and observations resulted in the emergence of six categories regarding the social aspect of the coffee shop. These themes include the opportunity to linger; ownership and territoriality; trust, respect and anonymity; productivity and opportunity to socialize and support. These themes are discussed in detail below. Opportunity to linger One obvious, but key element in the social atmosphere of the coffee shop is the opportunity to linger. Unlike a restaurant where a bill is presented at the end of a meal, once a beverage has been purchased in a coffee shop, the customers are typically welcome to stay as long as they like. The regulars who come in frequently, and linger, influence much of the social climate of the coffee shop. Although much of the motivation for lingering may be influenced by the attitude of the management, friendliness of the staff and patrons, and other social characteristics, there are physical characteristics that contribute to lingering behavior. Comfortable seating, seating that can easily be moved to accommodate conversations or groups, adequate lighting to read and communicate with others, and pleasant ambient conditions including acoustics, music, aroma, and views all contribute to lingering and length of time spent in the coffee shop. Feeling of ownership and territorialize The customers who participated in this study felt a sense of ownership, sometimes even to the point of entitlement, in the coffee shops they frequented. They had strong preferences for their chosen shop, opinions on how the shop should be run. In addition to the sense of ownership, these people also exhibited territorial feelings toward various areas within the coffee shop, such as a favorite seat or place at the bar. One definition of territoriality is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“the relationship between an individual or group and a particular setting that is characterized by a feeling of possessiveness and by attempts to control the appearance and use of spaceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (Bower, 1980, p.180). During interviews, it was clarified that most of these customers had a favourite seat. To secure these favorite seats, territorial behavior was exhibited in all of the coffee shop through the use of body language as well as the placement of belongings. Customers marked their territories wit h books, backpacks, and other personal items to let others know they had claimed the seat. Trust, respect and anonymity When a climate of trust is established, people feel welcome and able to be themselves. That could be a motivation for selecting a regular coffee shop for any customer. Another intriguing aspect of the coffee shop is the opportunity for anonymity. The coffee shop is not home or the office, where roles and relationships are clearly established. The coffee shop allows people to start anew or to portray themselves as someone other than who they currently are. Productivity Many patrons responded that the coffee shop is a place they went if they wanted to feel productive. For many students, the coffee shop is an alternative to the library. During an interview with group of students in a private institute, they expressed a strong preference for the coffee shop over the library. They also stated that they have the ability to drink coffee, having group discussions, people-watch, take a break and have a conversation, listen to music, and just avoid what they perceived as a sterile library atmosphere. Mostly for professionals, the coffee shop was a place to meet for business or to get a particular task accomplished. Interviews revealed that working in the coffee shop often allowed these professionals to focus on a specific project without the distractions that would be found at home or the office. The coffee shops were also popular with teens doing homework or talking with friends. Causal conversations with the teens revealed they enjoy drinking coffee because it made them feel grown up, and gave them the opportunity to go somewhere other than a home to get together. They are out of the sight of parents and feel a greater sense of autonomy. Opportunity to socialize and support The underlying concept behind the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"social beings and familiar strangersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ is that a personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s presence in the coffee shop somehow validates or confirms their existence as a social member of the community. Many designers feel responsible, when designing restaurants, bars, or coffee shops, for creating spaces that facilitate social interaction. However, although designing for sociability is important, designers should also note that findings from this study indicated that not all customers in the three coffee shops chose to interact, yet many received the benefits that one would expect from a social experience. For these patro ns, the outing to the coffee shop was more about being in the presence of familiar strangers and mostly being focused on their study or any particular home work. For many people, the coffee shop provides a place with a supportive group of acquaintances that enhances their overall well-being. Part of the social climate of the coffee shop is the support provided by the staff to other staff, the staff to the customers, and the customers to each other. This was the second critical error that contributed to the disruption in banking systems. These simple errors in procedures had huge repercussions that should have been overseen by management. However what was done was done. The Royal Bank of Canada had an escalating task on hand to mend the situation. They had to restore the accounts and repair the trust in their customers. Hungarian Dances Essay Concert Critique #1The Hungarian Dances are an intriguing group of works by JohannesBrahms. They are characterized by frequent changes in tempo and volume. These pieces are focused on the melodies created when the instruments areplayed together. Each piece also contains more than one melody. Newmelodies, or themes, usually include a change in tempo and a change indynamics within each piece. The volume differences also stand out on thetracks. They usually go from soft to loud almost suddenly. The change wasstartling to me the first time I heard it. Certain instruments are singledout in every section also. In some parts you will hear the polyphony in thepiece come together very nicely. The plagal cadence used throughout the 4tracks gives them a storybook feeling. I can imagine any of these piecesbeing used as score or even background for a song in a just about anyDisney animated movie. The theme-and-variations form that is utilized alsoadds to the feeling. The differences in these pieces, however places themin different movies. Track two sounds like it belongs in a movie such asAnastasia or Cinderella. It sounds like something that I woul d hear at oneof those old-fashioned formal dances. While listening to track three, Icould imagine the seven dwarfs hard at work. Track four almost sounds likeMr. Brahms copied it straight out of Fivel Goes West. I could think of anymovie other than Fantasia for track 1 though. Overall, these pieces wereenjoyable to me because they painted that picture in my mind. I could seethe action being played out in my head while listening to the HungarianDances. Bolero by Maurice Ravel is a very long piece. It is not mind-numbingeven though it is very repetitive. Ravel prevents this work from becomingboring by changing the pitch or increasing the volume of the piece forevery couple of times the beat repeats itself. The fact that the beat isnot boring to begin with, also helped to hold my attention. This piecepaints a picture in mind. In fact, it almost directs an entire scene fromany war movie. When the piece starts off very quiet, it is almost like thecalm before the storm when soldiers are preparing for battle. As the piecegets louder the troops are marching forward until at the end when theyfinally make to the war zone. I did not like, however, how the piece endedso suddenly. It was like the battle and began and ended with one shot. Itleft me wanting more. Other than the fact that this track ended too soon, Ienjoyed everything leading up to the end. The two tracks by Claude Debussy have an overwhelming sense ofurgency to them. The tempo of these tracks is what creates that feeling. The crescendos in these tracks, coupled with the loudness of them, are themain ingredients in the urgent feeling that is given off. The frequentchanges in melody are sudden and often confusing. It is sometimes hard forme to catch what is going on in the pieces. I did not enjoy these piecesvery much. Track number eight and tracks eleven through fifteen were pianotracks with faster tempos. The melody was quick, much like the Debussytracks, but it just sounded much better on the piano. The faster notesflowed instead of jumping around. The song texture comes togetherbeautifully on these tracks. I could not find a story in these pieces, butI enjoyed them simply for their sonic value. Track fourteen was a slowerthan the others, but it was not slow to the point where it lulled me tosleep like tracks nine, and ten. The changes in pitch and melody kept me interested. The crescendoin the middle of the piece is what caught my attention. When I firstlistened to it, I thought it was just like the other tedious piano pieces. That crescendo gave the piece and entire storyline. It had a beginning, ithad rising action, a climax, closing action, and a conclusion. I enjoyedthe piece. I dont have a very good background in this kind of music, but frommy standpoint, this CD was pretty good. When I listen to rap or rhythm andblues music, I judge albums by if I enjoy listening to every song or not. Even if I do not enjoy listening to a song, I will listen to it anyway tofind out what the lyrics are. I enjoyed twelve out of sixteen tracks onthis CD. That is a good ratio in my book. If was an avid listener toorchestra and piano music, I would spend my money on this collection ofworks.

Woman Warrior By Kingston Food strengthens us, without it we are weak. Eating has always been an important factor with families living in poor conditions. Often, those who could not help to produce more food are considered inferior or unworthy to eat. Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior is no exception, due to the relation it creates between eating and the strength of people. This is shown through the tale of Fa-Mu-Lan, the story of the eaters, and the references to the fellow relatives left in China. In the tale of Fa-Mu-Lan, the narrator is given a survival test, where she has to survive a mountain trek without provisions. During that trek, the narrator finds herself weary from hunger. Hunger brings out her animal instincts, because she needs to stay strong to live. ?On the fourth and fifth days, my eyesight sharp with hunger, I saw deer and used their trails when our ways coincided. Where deer nibbled, I gathered the fungus, the fungus of immortality? (25). The narrator is forced to search for her food to eat. The hungrier she becomes, the more feral she is. Meat also played a role in the connection between food and strength. During the beginning of her story she claimed she no longer needed meat. After she became starving, she breaks down and eats meat. I saw the rabbit had sacrificed itself for me. It had made me a gift of meat? (26). Her will was eroded by the hunger because as her hunger increased, she became weaker and her resolve was easier to destroy. When the narrator was not starving she was in control of her faculties. Hunger however, strips her even of vision, as she imagines things that do not exist. The narrator says, ?Hunger also changes the world when eating can't be habit, then neither can seeing. I saw two people made of gold dancing the earth's axis? (27). Viewing two gold dancers would be wonderful to witness, however the chances are very slim. The hunger had weakened her to the point of confusion, and possibly dilution. Just as hunger weakens a person so they cannot command themselves, eating will make a person powerful and the masters of others. The stories of the heroes who ate heaping amounts of food illustrate that those who can eat have extraordinary powers. The narrator says before, that her mother is powerfulbecause she can eat anything ? quick, pluck out the carp's eyes, one for Mother and one for Father. All heroes are bold towards food? (88). Her mother is master of the ghost because she can consume it. The story of Kao Chung also illustrates this point. This hero eats five chickens and drinks ten bottles of wine prior to slaying a sea-monster. The scholar-hunter Wei Pang was also a great eater; in fact, he was the most fantastic according to the narrator. He shoots a glowing sphere composed of flesh with eyes in it, and then eats it with his servant. Bye eating, these two heroes are able to conquer their foes. The story of Chen Luan-feng is another is another example of how eating makes a person powerful. By eating forbidden foods, Chen calls down an angry thunder god whose leg is chopped off by Chen, and the thunder god is then at the mercy of Chen. ?Big eaters win? (90) is the comment regarding an anonymous scholar from Hanchow. This scholar discovers some valuables on the side of the road; however, an evil frog guards them. He chases that frog off only to have two smaller frogs com that night. He proceeds to eat every frog that visits him, ?And at the end of the month the frogs stopped coming, leaving the scholar with the white silk and silver ingots? (90). These heroes are rewarded for their eating habits, but those who cannot eat are weak. The relatives of the narrator are always asking for money. They are weak characters because they are forced to rely on others to live. Unlike the heroes who command themselves and others, these relatives are not even in command of their own life, rather they have given up their life to the Communists. Because the Communists are cheating them out of food, they are starving and weak. The narrator says, ?What I will inherit someday is a green address book full of names. I'll send the relatives money, and they'll write me stories of their hunger? (206). The narrator describes the relatives very unflattering. They are considered lazy and unable to

One Art Essays One Art Paper One Art Paper Essay Topic: Poetry The art of losing isnt hard to master; so many things seem filled with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster, Lose something every day. Accept the fluster of lost door keys, the hour badly spent. The art of losing isnt hard to master. Then practice losing farther, losing faster: places, and names, and where it was you meant to travel. None of these will bring disaster. I lost my mothers watch. And look! my last, or next-to-last, of three beloved houses went. The art of losing isnt hard to master. I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster, some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent. I miss them, but it wasnt a disaster. Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture I love) I shant have lied. Its evident the art of losings not too hard to master though it may look like (Write it!) a disaster. Why I chose it She explains a major problem well in this poem. We have so many losses in life and we have to learn how to forget some of them otherwise life will overwhelm us. Only if we do this, we will learn how to deal with the big losses in life and the pain that comes with them. Elizabeth Bishop is trying to teach this important lesson to the reader and she does this by creating a poem with an interesting structure. She increases the amount that is lost after each stanza so the reader can understand how forgetting small losses can help them get over bigger losses. She uses a rhyme scheme of ABA in each of her 3 line stanzas and each middle line of the stanzas rhyme with each other middle line of the other stanzas e.g went, continent, intent. With this, the poem flows nicely which helps the reader understand it. Also I was curious on the poem because of the title. After reading it I questioned how loss can be named an art. Bishop explains this clearly in her poem. Commentary Elizabeth Bishops poem, One Art, is a poem overflowing with irony which uses the structure and expressions to evoke the emotion of loss which Bishop is trying to convey to the reader. She seems to have lost many things in her life and has written this poem for the sole purpose to reassure the reader that if they find control within themselves, they are able to accept the many losses that are in their lives. Loss is something that cannot be mastered, emotion is always attached to loss. But Bishop is trying to tell the reader that with each loss, you endure it more and will ultimately learn to control the feeling, with less pain. The speaker in this poem seems to be Bishop dealing with her inner emotions of loss, trying to master loss so she does not have to deal with the painful emotions afterwards. This is ironic at the very concept of mastering loss, as loss is not a feeling that can be mastered. The structure of the poem is a villanelle as there are five stanzas of three lines followed by a stanza of four lines. Bishop seems to have utilised this structure to increase the readers attention and respect for loss as each stanza progresses. The tone of this poem is recognized by the reader from reading the first line. The poem deals with loss which is associated with death. A poem dealing with this theme will most certainly have a negative tone, and One Art is no exception. The tone changes with each stanza, gaining in sadness as the poem continues. This is because the value of what is lost increases within each stanza. This tone helps the reader emphasise on the value of loss. Bishop uses repetition often and refrains the line The art of losing isnt hard to master which is done to stress on the importance of the title. Also the readers sense of the subject is gained by each repetition as the theme of the poem is emphasised after each stanza. Each refrain builds up stronger amounts of loss. The second stanza is based on the loss of door keys or wasting time. The poet personifies these lost objects, saying that they seem filled with the intent to be lost. This is showing that these objects want to be lost and by giving inanimate objects feelings, it conveys that these objects are not of great importance. These are basically simple losses that one can learn to forget, but as the poem progresses, the amount that is lost builds up, including personal things with much more importance. This point can be proven in the third stanza, where she says Then practice losing farther, losing faster: This is the point in the poem, where she begins to name things that can be lost with much greater importance. Following the third stanza, the next one involves things of personal importance to a person. my mothers watchthree beloved houses. These things are more personal as a home is one which symbolises love and protection, which is a contrast to the insignificant loss of keys. In the fifth stanza, she describes the loss of things with huge importance, two rivers, a continent. Bishop continues the patter of possessions increasing in importance, by describing things which affect thousands of people. She seems to have reached things of the highest importance but finally in the last stanza, it all leads up to the most painful loss, the loss of a lover. After the fifth stanza, she uses a dash to start the last stanza. This is done to show that she is finished describing the loss of material objects, and is moving on to the loss of something with the most importance. Its evident the art of losings not too hard to master though it may look like (Write it!) a disaster. This entire stanza flows together due to the quicker pace and full use of enjambment throughout the entire stanza. The reader was use to the punctuation increasing and pace slowing down each stanza from the first to the fifth, so this increased the impact of pace on the last stanza, making it more powerful. Parenthesis was effectively used to show how hard and painful it was for the writer to write down her emotions into words, (Write it!). Bishop is trying to teach the reader to endure the many small losses, in order to feel less pain in the loss of something with much importance. By breaking away from describing the loss of an inanimate material objects towards a living person, she amplifies the feeling of loss which conveys the message of the poem clearly to the reader. With each stanza, we further understand the emotions which Bishop is trying to convey to us. She uses the title to imply how dealing with a loss is an art in its own accord. An art is something of beauty that requires massive amounts of effort to accomplish. The use of punctuation is another distinct feature of the structure of this poem, with each stanza, the amount of punctuation increases up until the fifth stanza. Bishop increases the value of what was being lost, along with this, the punctuation increases as well. This was done to slow down the pace of the poem so that the reader understands the importance of each possession. When describing each thing that was being lost in the fourth, two cities, lovely ones.two rivers, a continent. Along with the commas, caesura was used as well in the first line to slow down the pace. By forcing the reader to stop in the middle of the line, it takes them by surprise as it was sudden, not done in the poem before. This stanza contrasts with the quicker pace of the first stanza as there was only one semi-colon and comma used. This is clear evidence of the punctuation used by Bishop which greatly emphasises what Bishop was trying to achieve with this poem. This poem was written to show the readers the comparison of loss between different things. This poem may seem simple, but is very deep mainly through the way the poet utilised the structure and the richness in irony. This can be seen by how she refrains the use of loss isnt hard to master. This changes in the last line to loss isnt too hard to master This might show how it is getting harder for the poet to overcome the loss of a loved one. Bishop proves that the loss of trivial things and mastering this loss, will not be able to prepare you for the loss of something beloved by you, which further increases the ironic nature of the poem. In the end she could be all alone, hence the title One Art. She believed that if she could detach herself from pain and forget these feelings, she can begin a new life and grow, but realises that it is too hard for her.

The Tigris and Euphrates rivers of Mesopotamia have unpredictable flood patterns. This affected their view of the universe because the inability to prepare for floods leads the Mesopotamians to believe that the world was harsh and unforgiving. Analysis of South of the Slot by Jack London The slot is a metaphor of the â€Å"class cleavage of society†. There was a contrast between the North and South of the Slot in terms of building types: in the North were the higher-class centers of diversion, lodging, and business; and in the South were the lower-class centers of lodging, unskilled work/business. The buildings are figures of two contrasting classes that were segregated (?). In order to study the southern people (the working class) a sociology professor of the University of CA, Freddie Drummond (FD), decides to work temporarily as an unskilled laborer. Initially he experiences social problems of adaptation and acceptance by his fellow workers. For example, he doesn’t understand their insistent admonitions to reduce his work pace. As a result of his fierce competition against them, by the 6th day FD doubles his earnings. He misunderstands their lack of loyalty to the business, and looks down on them. Being unable to convince Drummond, and as a last resor t, his co-workers jumped on him and attacked him so badly that he becomes ill. Once recovered, Drummond changes job. He finds himself working as a fruit-distributor among the women and decides not to change their work conditions. In six months, Drummond works at many jobs, and succeeds in imitating a genuine worker. A Journey through War

The 3rd of September has brought many changes to my life that will shape the course of my future for years to come. I have signed up to Join the United States Army and will soon be leaving to fght in the war against Great Britain. The war was officially declared on the 18th of June after President Madison was finally persuaded by the War Hawks to battle the British. Madison stated that â€Å"war with the British was inevitable† and then asked Congress to go to war a few months later.After the president's declaration, I thought about Joining the war effort and was reminded of ll the cruel and outrageous actions that the British had performed against the United States. For many years now, The British have been violating our neutral rights and blocking off the French coast from American trading ships. In addition, the British have also been supporting and giving arms to Indian tribes that raid American cities along the Northwest Territory and block expansion into the west.Lastly and most importantly, the British scum have been practicing the horrid act of impressment on American ships and have been kidnapping thousands of American ailors in the search for Navvy deserters. After reflecting over all of these things, I couldn't help but become overcome with rage and anger. At that very moment, I swore to fght for the army and vowed to claim revenge for Britain's actions. I also promised to avenge all of those who had been impressed by the British Navvy and killed in Indian raids. The British have offended and taken advantage of our nation for long enough.It is time to act and show the Brits that we will no longer tolerate their behavior. August 15, 1812 The war has gotten off to a bad start. A few days after I was accepted into the US army and placed under the command of General William Henry Harrison, Congress had ordered for an attack on the British colony of Canada. Thus, we set out from our fort in Detroit and began marching towards Canada. This was going to be my very first battle and I was very anxious to get my first taste of war. I was confident in my fellow soldiers and believed that victory would be unproblematic and straightforward.However, as we marched to our destination, we were met by the British and a group of Native American warriors who were led by Tecumseh. Our general feared the Indian's vicious war tactics and knew that we would certainly face heavy losses if we engaged the British force. That day we were forced to shamefully surrender Fort Detroit and retreat. After our humiliating defeat, morale among my fellow soldiers was drastically low and we soon began developing doubts about victory. A few weeks later, we yet again attempted to invade Canada, but were once again defeated.After our two defeats, morale was at an all-time low and the only thing that even vaguely cheered us up, was the mention of the USS Constitution. The hip had managed to defeat the British vessel, Guerriere and was nicknamed â€Å"Old Ironsid es† when a shot bounced off its hull during battle. It was one the few victories that was heard about in a sea of losses. P. S. I shall not see war for a very long time control over Lake Erie. October 16, 1813 Today is a glorious day and my fellow soldiers and I are relishing a satisfying victory against the British and their Native American allies.It all started on September 10th, 1813, when Oliver Hazard Perry assembled a fleet of military ships and engaged the British naw in Lake Erie. After a long and bloody battle, the American fleet prevailed and Oliver Perry, watching the battle from Put-in-Bay, Ohio sent General Harrison the message, â€Å"We have met the enemy and they are ours. † With Lake Erie under American control, the British frantically evacuated Fort Detroit and hastily headed back for safety in Canada, but in the end, we were able to intercept their troops and force them to wage war.On October 5th, 1813, we fought the British and their Native American a llies in the Battle of Thames. At the end of the bloody battle, we had defeated the enemy force and had managed to kill Tecumseh, he Native American leader who had aided the British in the war. Our luck did not end here, however. A few days after our victory in the Battle of Thames, we attacked the Canadian town of York and set fire to the parliament buildings. After these victories, morale among my fellow soldiers was higher than ever before and we soon grew confident in victory over the British.August 25, 1814 Yesterday was a sad, sad day in American history that I will never forget for as long as I live. Just a couple of months ago, my fellow soldiers and I had enjoyed a heightened sense of confidence in our chance of victory. We believed that as long as the British were still at war with the French, they would not be able to send the majority of their troops to America and would thus, not be able to pose a large threat. However, several months later, we got news that Britain had managed to defeat the French and their brilliant military leader, Napoleon Bonaparte.With the French out of the way, the British were able to concentrate their military efforts on the war with America and were ready launch an attack. On August 24, 1814, British ships sailed into Chesapeake Bay and unloaded 5,000 troops (led by Major General Robert Ross) hat were headed directly for the nation's heart, Washington, DC. As the British marched towards the capitol, President Madison hastily ordered for the concentration of all nearby troops and the safekeeping of American documents such as the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and George Washington's Correspondence.In the Battle of Bladensburg, the recently assembled American defenders tried to hold off the large British attack force, but they were quickly overpowered by the well-trained enemy soldiers. As the British continued to advance towards the capitol, Dolley Madison, the first lady (which I am quite fond of) mazingl y risked her life in order to selflessly save President Washington's painting. She was among the last to evacuate the White House. Moments after Dolleys daring act, the British scoundrels barbarically raided and burned important government buildings such as the Capitol and Library of Congress.The British scum also burned down President Madison's home, the White House, a structure that has long been a symbol of freedom and independence for the American people. There seemed to be nothing we could do to protect the city, but fortunately, as if by the will of god, a iolent hurricane and tornado extinguished the fires and drove the British soldiers back to Benedict. After hearing this shocking story, my dislike for the British turned British again and will try to defend the city of Baltimore which is believed to be the next target for the British troops.September 21, 1814 The month of September has brought two glorious victories to the American people and has provided us with revenge for the burning of Washington. The first victory took place in the city of Baltimore. In the city of Baltimore, American troops were strengthening Fort McHenry for the upcoming British siege while my squad and I were helping fortify the city for the impending land based attack. While doing my work, I recall seeing a large and magnificent American flag hanging over the fort.I later learned that the majestic â€Å"Star Spangled Banner Flag† had been sewed by Mary Young Pickersgill on General George Armistead's orders. The British were advancing towards the city quickly and we needed more time to reinforce our defenses. Thus, it was decided that a group of soldiers led by General John Stricker would be sent out to buy time for the Americans. On September 12, 1814, John Stricker's and Robert Ross's forces fought each other in the Battle of North Point. Although they lost the battle, they had bought us time and had even managed to kill Major General Robert Ross.When the British land force arrived, we were ready for them and were able to hold them back easily. Meanwhile, in Fort McHenry, American soldiers were desperately trying to hold off the British naw and keep the fort alive. If this fort fell to the British, the city might have been destroyed and the war might have fallen into their hands. The American defenders however held firm and after 25 hours of bombardment from the British avy, the Brits finally gave up their assault and retreated. After the long, tiresome fght, we celebrated our amazing victory and shouted into the air.During this period of celebration, Francis Scott Key who had seen the whole battle from his ship and was deeply moved by it wrote the poem â€Å"Defense of Fort McHenry'. The poem was set to the tune of a popular British drinking song and was distributed throughout Baltimore on hand bills. While we celebrated our victory in Baltimore, General Sir George Prevost and his 10,000 British troops departed from Canada and attacked New York in the hopes of apturing the seaside city of Plattsburgh. The attack was easily thwarted when a group of American warships on Lake Champlain defeated the British flotilla.The British realized that control over the lake gave the Americans an advantage over their force and they were required to retreat back to Canada. January 15, 1815 The year of 181 5 has brought the American people another outstanding military victory and the end of a long and tiring war. After being defeated in the Battle of Lake Chaplain, the British realized that war with the USA was detrimental and was simply not worth the effort. On December 24, 1814, Britain and America signed a peace treaty in Ghent, Belgium which officially ended the war between the two nations.However, news of the treaty traveled too slowly and troops were not informed of the war's end quickly enough. Thus, on January 8, 181 5, the British and Americans engaged in one last gruesome battle at New Orleans. In the battle, Andrew Jackson's 4,0 00 American ragtag defenders were heavily outnumbered by the 10,000 British troops. However, the British forgot to bring scaling ladders and by simply staying behind earthen defenses and shooting from behind bales of cotton, Jackson Orleans was saved and Jackson became a national hero.After the ending of the war and the victory at New Orleans, people throughout the nation were feeling proud and honored to be an American. In addition, many Americans started to feel an improved sense of patriotism and nationalism. I myself felt proud to be a part of such a great nation. In a matter of a few years, our young country had grown strong enough to defeat the British army and had even gained the respect of other, much older nations. I believe that this war will define the American people for many years to come.

Mutual Respect Between Students and Teachers The relationship between students and teachers should be one of mutual respect. Students should listen to the teacher and try their best in the class. Teachers, on the other hand need to do their best to give their students a quality education and respect them as individuals. There should be a set curriculum, but teachers need to be creative in how they teach what is required. California is considered one of the lowest in terms of education standards. In order for this to change, teachers and students both need to start working towards a solution. Students need to have more respect for their teachers and take more responsibility for their education. I did have a creative writing class, which helped me with my writing skills, but because of the amount of work we did it seemed more like a required class. Maybe the schools need to update their electives to reflect what will be useful to the students futures. Two big differences I noticed between when I attended high school and now were being able to leave campus for lunch, and writing our own notes when we turned eighteen. Now, because of fighting off campus during lunch as well as tighter security, students have to stay on campus for lunch. I understand the concern for safety, but is the answer taking away their freedom? A few of the students I talked to referred to school as jail. Most schools have fences all the way around them, and some have metal detectors. One local school put video cameras around campus, yet they dont have enough money for field trips, or updated textbooks. When I was in High School writing our own notes made us feel like we were being accepted into the adult world. We were responsible for our decisions. If we missed too many classes our grades would suffer. Making the decision of attending class helped prepare me for the responsibility of college.
